Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly is a volunteer-based organization, committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly, through visits, special events and parties. Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly offers flexible and diverse volunteer opportunities - volunteers can choose to make weekly, monthly, or seasonal time commitments.
History:
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly was founded in Paris in 1946 as a Catholic brotherhood of men who devoted their lives to serving the poor and the isolated elderly left without the support of family after World War II. In 1959, a Little Brothers office was opened in Chicago. Soon after, the organization became non-religious and open to both men and women volunteers. San Francisco's Little Brothers is part of a national and international network of Little Brothers affiliates.

I believe no one should be alone.

The joy brought by sharing moments of your life with someone who has lived a lifetime of loves, losses, adventures and has seen the world change dramatically again and again, changes you. No one should be alone, especially at the end of their lives which is why I volunteer for Little Brothers. Our elders have so much to share. You never know - you may end up hearing about life in your neighborhood 50 years, dancing a dance from a time gone by or catching the twinkle in the eye of the girl who was the life of the party 70 years ago and today. Little Brothers is a great organization that really supports its volunteers and makes it easy to connect with elders no matter how much time you have to give. I highly recommend them!

A nourished mind is a healthy mind

The elderly residents of San Francisco are some of the most independent and interesting people I have met since moving to The City. They are living witnesses to this exceptional experiment in hard work, progressive values and living well that is San Francisco.
Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly helps these folks continue this tradition - allowing them to operate independently by providing rides to medical appointments and in-home visits. Due to budgetary constraints, The City has been forced to reduce these types of services and so it is our responsibility to pick up the slack. But we need more volunteers for the large number of seniors requiring these services.
The seniors in this program all live independently and can continue to do so with a little help from their friends. Some cannot physically take public transportation and many cannot afford the cost of a taxi for their frequent medical appointments. And anyway, isn't it so much nicer to have a friend drive you to the doc?
Many of the seniors do not have regular contact with family and friends anymore so it is also important they continue to socialize to keep their minds sharp. A nourished mind is a healthy mind.
I strongly encourage the younger residents of San Francisco to share a bit of their time to help our Friends. Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly does not require a huge time committment and can accomodate your busy schedule. And think of the fantastic stories on City living you'll be able to share with your friends.
