Little Brothers - Friends Of The Elderly
Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly is a volunteer-based organization, committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly, through visits, special events and parties. Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly offers flexible and diverse volunteer opportunities - volunteers can choose to make weekly, monthly, or seasonal time commitments.
History:
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly was founded in Paris in 1946 as a Catholic brotherhood of men who devoted their lives to serving the poor and the isolated elderly left without the support of family after World War II. In 1959, a Little Brothers office was opened in Chicago. Soon after, the organization became non-religious and open to both men and women volunteers. San Francisco's Little Brothers is part of a national and international network of Little Brothers affiliates.

I believe no one should be alone.
 |
The joy brought by sharing moments of your life with someone who has lived a lifetime of loves, losses, adventures and has seen the world change dramatically again and again, changes you. No one should be alone, especially at the end of their lives which is why I volunteer for Little Brothers. Our elders have so much to share. You never know - you may end up hearing about life in your neighborhood 50 years, dancing a dance from a time gone by or catching the twinkle in the eye of the girl who was the life of the party 70 years ago and today. Little Brothers is a great organization that really supports its volunteers and makes it easy to connect with elders no matter how much time you have to give. I highly recommend them! posted on May 1, 2007 |

A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE
 |
The agency that I volunteer for is Little Brothers of Elderly. This amazing organization provides outreach, advocacy, and companionship to isolated elders. Volunteers provide help to the elders by visiting, socializing, and helping them with household tasks.
I started out as a Holiday visiting volunteer last year. However, after I experienced the joy of visiting my elder friends I decided that I needed to dedicate more time and become a visiting volunteer. I went through training and now I am assigned to a very special lady who I visit every other week. I enjoy every minute I spend with her. She shares her life stories and wisdom with me. Every visit brings more joy into my life.
My experience volunteering has been life changing. During my last visit, two weeks ago, I received the best gift from my wonderful elder friend. She told me “You make my life.” Seeing that my time makes such a big difference in another person’s life makes me feel very special and fulfilled. posted on April 25, 2006 |
