For more than 36 years, we have provided after school reading programs and parent empowerment services in order to provide support, training, and educational opportunities to help children and their families develop the skills and competencies needed to attain personal, economic and family goals as well as strengthen their communities.

Description:
Mission Learning Center is a literacy-focused non-profit organization located in the primarily Latino Mission District in San Francisco County, California. To support our mission, we provide after school reading programs to students that fall into the one-third of children in the San Francisco Unified School District that are reading below grade level. After seven months of instruction with qualified staff and a comprehensive reading curriculum, these students improve by up to two grade levels. Our Parent Empowerment Project (PEP) services include parent workshops, support groups, book clubs, and home visits, with an emphasis on school readiness, early literacy and creating a literacy rich home environment.

History:
Our services began in 1972 with after school literacy programs for children who were not yet reaching their academic potential, and we have expanded that program over the years to three sites, along with a five-week summer reading program, serving 180 students each year. In 1986 we realized that in order for our work to be effective we must include service to parents because the origins of many of the children's academic difficulties begin before they enter school. Mission Learning Center was in the forefront of acknowledging the importance of family participation in schools and began the Parent Empowerment Project (PEP).

Since 1999 the Mission Learning Center has spearheaded the annual celebration Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, whose purpose is to advance the cause of early literacy and to promote quality children's literature. Each year, we partner with KQED, Bay Area Discovery Museum, the San Francisco Public Library, Children's Book Press, the San Francisco Unified School District and others in producing this event where more than 1,000 children and families enjoy an afternoon of entertainment by children's performing arts organizations and professional storytellers, as well as literacy-related activities. Thanks to donations, children receive a high quality hard cover book of their choice.
