The New Century Chamber Orchestra seeks to present a fresh new face for classical music in the Bay Area. Concerts by the 18-piece string orchestra are informal, exciting and fun, and our performances are in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco and San Rafael.

Description:
The New Century Chamber Orchestra was formed by musicians looking to bring about something new in classical music. They decided to have the members of the orchestra make all musical decisions collectively rather than having a conductor lead. And they but a priority of on adequate rehearsal time: most orchestras rehearsal three or four time for a performance, but the NCCO has nine rehearsals.

Concerts are led by the Concertmaster, who is also the Music Director. The NCCO is currently in the middle of a two year search for a new music director.

Most of the members of the orchestra come from Northern California, however other members of the group come from as far away as New York City and Berlin.

In addition to orchestra concerts in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco and San Rafael, New Century also presents a 3-concert chamber music series at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The series is underwritten by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation.

An active Educational Outreach Program features numerous K-5 classroom visits by NCCO string quartets
to schools throughout the Bay Area. A new collaboration with Malcolm X Academy in Hunter's Point provides access to music education and instrumental music instruction to students at Saturday afternoons.

History:
The New Century Chamber Orchestra is widely regarded as the finest small orchestra in Northern California. The ensemble regularly receives outstanding reviews in the San Francisco Chronicle and other media.

The orchestra has toured throughout California, Arizona, and Oregon, and as far east as New Orleans.

Four commercial CD recordings are currently available, the most recent having been released in June 2004. A Shostakovich Cd entitled "Written With the Heart's Blood" was a finalist for a Grammy Award.
