Since 1983, OASES has worked to create a sustainable community through the mission of "empowering youth who have limited resources, particularly those in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities of Oakland, to maximize their potential through educational services and social support."
Description:
OASES is open to all youth. Oakland has one of the highest rates of Asian linguistic isolation in the Bay Area (42%)1. Oakland is one of the three cities in the Bay Area that has the lowest rates of Asian high school completion- 30% or more of Asians in these cities do not have a high school degree.2 In order to address these issues, OASES trains the largest volunteer force- 400 U.C. Berkeley students - in any Oakland Unified School District after school program to provide individualized tutoring and mentoring to over 400 low-income youth in grades 1-12, and provides enrichment & leadership programs, and other new experiences. In Oakland Chinatown, OASES provides the most comprehensive services, and serves the highest number youth (400) with the lowest tutor to youth ratio of (1:1 to 1:4).
History:
OASES began in 1983 as a community service club of the University of California, Berkeley. Volunteer college students offered individualized academic support and mentoring to prepare children for school success. Over the years, the club grew rapidly as more volunteers dedicated their time and skills to help the growing number of youth in need. In 1991, OASES became a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The OASES Community Center is located in the Oakland Chinatown neighborhood and is easily accessible by public transportation. The Center provides flexible classroom and meeting space, a state-of-the-art technology laboratory, administrative offices, and study/activity areas filled with educational reference materials. Open daily during the public school year, the Center provides a safe and enriching environment for the community.

OASES Rocks!
 |
While funding for critical programs such as music, art, computers, dance, etc. are being cut throughout American education, OASES fills this void for the children of Oakland Chinatown. The program ensures the development of bright and multi-dimensional children by bringing in eager and energetic college students who both tutor and mentor. OASES' academic and social gains are a shining example that the woes in our public schools can be overcome. posted by bestruong on July 28, 2006 |

OASES ROCKS!
 |
As funds are cut for important subjects such as music, art, computers, etc., OASES fills the void to an entire community in Oakland. The services that OASES provides ensures the development of bright minds and creative children, something we don't see consistently in American education today. After volunteering for two years with OASES, I have gained so much working with this organized and compassionate program! posted by bestruong on July 28, 2006 |

A Life Changing Experience
 |
OASES is an excellent and very organized program filled with awesome people! The kids are sweet and fun, and as a tutor, I learned that they really need role-models like us. OASES is really a team that cares about helping these kids. OASES is also an excellent program where one can learn valuable leadership skills, and no matter how much time you put into volunteering for OASES, it's all worth it. It's all worth it. :) posted by KristelQ on July 28, 2006 |
