Pacifica School Volunteers

Mission Statement
The purpose of Pacifica School Volunteers is to inspire a love of learning, advance students’ academic achievement, and promote students’ well being. Toward these ends, we deliver a comprehensive program that:
-Recruits, trains, and places adult volunteers in our public schools;
-Involves high school and college students in serving our schools;
-Assists parents in supporting their children;
-Presents community-wide events to promote literacy and academic achievement; and
-Builds community by strengthening ties among students, families, businesses, civic organizations, and the schools.

Description:
Pacifica School Volunteers (PSV) recruits and places adult, college and high school volunteers in classrooms of the Pacifica schools with the greatest needs. Volunteers help struggling students with reading, math and other subjects. They also help with classroom projects and other tasks. Music, art and drama volunteers share their skills with students.
Pacifica School Volunteers provides training for volunteers and parents to give them skills and strategies to help children succeed in school.
PSV also organizes events to promote literacy and school success. Some of these short-term volunteer opportunities include: Read Aloud Days, Senior Exhibitions and Junior Achievement.

History:
In 1997, PSV incorporated and started a pilot program of 23 volunteers at one elementary school. Since then, PSV has grown to a network of more than 600 volunteers, serving all nine public schools in Pacifica. Pacifica School Volunteers has received the San Mateo County Children’s Report Award for “Helping Children Succeed in School,” the International Reading Association’s Celebrate Literacy Award, and proclamations and awards from the Pacifica School District, the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and the California State Assembly and Senate.
