The Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco provides temporary housing for the families of seriously ill children. Our mission is to provide temporary, comfortable lodging and a supportive environment for parents and siblings as they care for their sick child. At the Ronald McDonald House, families find a place to eat, sleep, and gather strength from each other and our caring staff and volunteers, who have been providing a haven to children and their families for nearly 20 years.

Description:
Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco is one of more than 220 Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide that provide assistance to families of seriously ill children. Since opening its doors on January 26, 1989, Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco has been providing a comfortable, caring home-away-from-home to those who bring their children to San Francisco for specialized medical treatment. More than a place to eat and sleep, the House is a haven. It's a place
where family members can rest and draw strength from each other, the House's compassionate staff, and other families facing similar challenges.

History:
Each Ronald McDonald House is independently owned and operated by a community supported nonprofit organization. The first house opened in 1974 in Philadelphia, with the help of the National Football League's Philadelphia Eagles. Since 1974, Ronald McDonald House Charities has provided seed money for new houses and the expansion of existing houses.

The idea for the Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco was inspired by a baby named Simon Nagel Gold. After four weeks of struggling for life in the intensive care nursery at Mt. Zion Medical Center, he died from cardiac problems. As a tribute to their son and to help ease burden on families faced with similar circumstances, Simon's parents worked to open the Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco. They were able to turn their vision into reality by enlisting the support of medical professionals, friends in the community, and local McDonald's owners/operators.
