Second Harvest Food Bank is the primary source of donated, surplus, and purchased food for nonprofit agencies in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

In fiscal year 08-09 (July '08 - June '09), we distributed over 39.1 million pounds of nutritious food to low-income people in need in every zip code of our service area from Daly City to Gilroy, and from the ocean to the bay. This is a 13% increase over last year.

We provide food efficiently through our direct service programs (see Food Bank Programs below) and by collaborating with a network of 316 partner nonprofit agencies operating 445 programs at 834 different food distribution sites. Partner agencies include shelters, pantries, soup kitchens, children’s programs, senior meal sites, and residential programs.

In fiscal year 08-09, volunteers contributed approximately 261,102 hours of service, which is equivalent to 126 full-time employees.

Description:
Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is a private non-profit organization that collects and distributes more than 40 million pounds of food each year to low-income children, adults and seniors. The Food Bank currently serves an average of 216,000 individuals each month; nearly 60% are families with dependent children. This is enough people to fill AT&T Park more than three times.

History:
The Food Bank, Inc. of Santa Clara County was formed in 1974 by Economic and Social Opportunities, and incorporated as a non-profit agency in 1979. In 1988, the San Mateo County Food Bank merged with The Food Bank, Inc. of Santa Clara County to become Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

Second Harvest Food Bank is a certified member of Feeding America, a network of food banks and food distribution programs in the United States. This membership allows Second Harvest Food Bank to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support.

In 1992, Second Harvest Food Bank moved into a new 65,000 square foot warehouse in San Jose which serves as its main food distribution center. In June of 1995, the Peninsula Distribution Center began serving San Mateo County in a newly renovated 22,000 square foot warehouse in San Carlos.
