The mission of SafeHouse is to provide a clean and sober living community to empower homeless women who have been working in prostitution to attain needed skills and resources in order to grow and become independent and self-sufficient members of society
Description:
SafeHouse is a transitional living space where homeless single women who are leaving prostitution may reside for up to 18 months. We provide housing for up to 10 women at one time. SafeHouse provides 24hour staff support, including intensive case management, peer advocacy, practical support and therapy. Ours is a holisitic approach to healing, employing a strengths-based, womanist/feminist model. Our board, volunteers and staff are made up of women from all walks of life, coming together to support the healing of women whom are often marginalized.
History:
SafeHouse was started by its Executive Director, Reverend Glenda Hope, in response to the murders of women in prostitution happening in the early 1990s in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. Time and again, she heard from the women that they had no safe place to be. SafeHouse opened its doors in January 1998. It is an ecumenical partnership between the Sisters of the Presentation and San Francisco Network Ministries.
