The mission of Tenderloin Health is to optimize the health of the Tenderloin’s homeless, poor and most vulnerable residents. We serve those living with and at the greatest risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS, who have difficulty obtaining services elsewhere, especially due to substance use, mental illness, sexual orientation, gender identity, race and ethnicity, and/or other social barriers.
Description:
Tenderloin Health is a nonprofit organization that fills a unique niche in the provision of services to the chronically homeless and most needy residents of the Tenderloin. We are unique in that we area:
- highly accessible, with a central location and extended hours (Community Drop-in Center)
- we do not turn away any clients from our services
- we offer a continuum of care in a “one-stop shop” model
- we are based on a Harm Reduction Model and we focus on reducing or containing the negative impacts of substance use, unprotected sex and/or other behavioral choices
- we recognize and serve the diversity of our community
Our services and programs include:
- Community Drop-in Center, that provides public bathrooms, phones, shelter reservations, snacks, socializing, and information referral in a safe and welcoming space
- Health Promotions, which includes street outreach, drop-in and scheduled health education groups and events, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C testing, counseling, and linkage to resources, twice weekly needle exchange, and transgender programs
- Social Services, which includes case management, social services, and home visits for people living with HIV/AIDS
- Housing programs, which include emergency shelter for persons who are HIV+, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing and case management for ex-offenders
- Medical, dental, alternative and mental health services
- Vocational programs for clients, Tenderloin residents, and agency staff
Tenderloin Health also has a Volunteer and Intern Resources Program and other administrative programs that support the many direct service programs and projects.
History:
Tenderloin Health is a merger of Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center (TARC) and Continuum, two harm reduction organizations in the Tenderloin that, for the last twenty years, had been serving chronically homeless and most vulnerable persons with or at the highest risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
