Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY), is a San Francisco-based intermediary committed to the inclusion of current and former foster youth, and the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in promoting strategies and best practices that ensure there are effective systems to serve Bay Area foster youth in achieving a successful transition to adulthood.

Description:
HEY’s mission is to strengthen and connect San Francisco’s systems of support for Bay Area foster care youth so that all youth emancipating, or “aging out” of the foster care system can enjoy a healthy transition to adulthood.

History:
Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY) was started as a community-based, collaborative project of the United Way of the Bay Area in 1999 as a response to the challenges facing youth who emancipate, or age out, of the foster care system. At that political moment, there was no organization advocating specifically for the needs of emancipating foster care youth in San Francisco. Originally called Housing for Emancipated Youth, HEY’s first three years were focused on issue based advocacy.

HEY’s eight year history is paralleled with the increasing visibility and growth in public awareness of issues facing emancipated youth. As services, programs and leadership addressing issues related to emancipating foster youth expanded to address housing issues, HEY broadened its work to take on the network of support necessary for youth and young adults to become self sufficient: Housing, Health, Education and Employment, and changed its name to Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY).

HEY has played a significant role in generating visibility and momentum around the issues facing transitioning foster care youth.
