Mission Statement: To inspire a just and sustainable future through our programs, land and legacy.
We have an experiential environmental education program for school children, a multicultural youth summer camp, a working organic farm, a hostel, and a full calendar of environmental education and community events.
Description:
Programs:
Established in 1970, it is one of the oldest environmental education school programs in theBay Area.
Summer Camp: the oldest interracial summer camp in the country, Hidden Villa is committed to bringing children together from all races, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Hostel: Our hostel offers affordable accommodations for domestic and international travelers, and for group retreats.
Community Supported Agriculture: Shareholders purchase a portion of the farm's harvest at the beginning of the growing season and receive a weekly basket filled with seasonal produce from May through late November.
Community Programs: Unique multicultural performances, farm and sustainable building tours, workshops, forums, family and children's activities.
Hiking Trails: Eight miles of trails wind through the surrounding hills.
Hours: Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 am to dusk. Closed to the public for nine weeks during summer camp, except for select open weekends.
History:
Purchased in 1924 by Josephine and Frank Duveneck, Hidden Villa was donated, by the whole family, to the people of the region upon Frank's death in 1985.
Since 1945, Hidden Villa has sponsored multicultural children's camps designed to expose young people to the natural world and to others whose ethnic and socio-=economic backgrounds are unlike their own.
The Duvenecks were instrumental in founding the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club; Friends Outside, a support group for prisoners and their families; and, they sheltered Japanese-Americans returning from internment camps and provided safe harbor for Cesar Chavez as he organized farm workers in the fifties.
