The National Archives and Records Administration ensures, for the citizen and the public servant, for the President and for the Congress and the Courts, ready access to essential evidence.

Description:
The National Archives Pacific Region-San Francisco makes available for public research a major collection of historical records, dated 1850-1970s, generated by approximately 120 Federal field offices within our region (northern and central California, Nevada, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands), plus a large collection of National Archives microfilm including U.S. population Census, 1790-1930. We also provide public programs relating to public education and the need for primary sources in the curriculum, as well as to holdings-relevant regional historical research communities including immigration, environmental, military, scientific, labor, and ethnic history.

History:
The National Archives was established in 1934 to remedy 150 years of neglect relating to the nation's Federal documentary heritage. Regional archives like ours date from ca. 1970, when they were established at locations around the nation to provide improved research access to the history of significant Federal programs relating to those regions and the people living in them.
