Second Start provides free, confidential literacy services to adults in the community. Second Start helps people sixteen and over who are not currently enrolled in high school, live in Oakland, read below the fifth grade level, and speak English well enough to communicate with a service provider and express their literacy goals.

Description:
Second Start offers students a student orientation, skills assessment, small classes in reading, writing, math and spelling, a computer learning center with internet access, one-on-one tutoring, workshops in health, art and other forms of applied literacy, a Families for Literacy program, leadership opportunities, assistance from our skilled and dedicated staff and, where appropriate, referrals to other programs. All our services are free and confidential.
Tutors must be 18 years of age or older, be able to speak English well enough to communicate with learners and staff, successfully complete an 18-hour tutor training, make a nine-month commitment, and complete monthly tutor reports.

History:
Since 1984, Second Start has successfully provided free, confidential literacy services to the community. Our mission is to enable individuals who are functioning at basic levels of literacy to further develop their knowledge and potential and to attain higher levels of literacy while achieving their goals.
