Flyaway Productions performs apparatus-based dances that expose the range and power of female physicality. The orgnanization cultivates ongoing investigations of women's social and cultural identity, and poses dance performance as a medium for political expression.

Description:
Flyaway's key programs encompass performance, dance training, touring, and collaboration with local community groups and organizations. After watching Flyaway's pieces, audiences are more aware of pressing critical issues—water scarcity at home and abroad, a strong history of labor protest, the legacy of female grief, and the city's history of displacement. Flyaway uses physical risk and spectacle to convey some aspect of these political problems. The company's work is most communicative when it is steeped in the right balance of beauty, awe, and provocation.

History:
Founded in 1996, Flyaway offers an annual home season on San Francisco, in both theater and site-specific venues. Half of our productions are performed outdoors in off-the-ground public sites and are offered free of charge. A recent audience survey indicates the following: 60% Caucasian, 20% Asian, 15% Latino and 5% African American who ranged in age from 10-75. The company offers 12 workshops annually for about 150 students. Women and girls age 10-55 comprise 90% of our students. Flyaway focuses its Girlfly and Kidfly workshops on at-risk youth in underserved neighborhoods.
