Lindsay Wildlife Museum connects people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share.
Description:
Lindsay Wildlife Museum is a pioneer in the field of wildlife rehabilitation and a leader in family-oriented natural science and environmental education. Through educational programs, wildlife rehabilitation and special exhibits, the museum strives to foster a lifelong ethic in learning to care for the earth. Supported by a large corps of volunteers, the museum serves more than 100,000 visitors and provides about 40,000 school children with science and nature education in their classrooms and at our facility every year. Approximately 6,000 animals are brought to the wildlife hospital each year, and over 60 live, non-releasable native wild animals are on display in the museum.
History:
It began modestly in 1955, when Alexander Lindsay turned his love for teaching about nature to neighborhood children into the Diablo Junior Museum. Originally housed in an elementary school, it offered classes and field trips focused on nature. In 1965, it was moved to an empty pump house in Walnut Creekâs Larkey Park. The City assumed operation of the museum until 1986, when it became independently operated. A new building constructed in 1993 increased the capacity and opened new possibilities for museum programs.
