Jobs for Youth…Their Future is Our Business

Vision Statement
A community transformed because all young people have an opportunity to achieve their fullest potential and be a part of the thriving local economy.

Mission Statement
To create pathways to the local business community that enable young people to strengthen their foundation for success.

Description:
Jobs for Youth (JFY) is a collaborative project created in partnership with United Way of the Bay Area and the city of San Francisco to streamline the process for employers to list opportunities for youth and for youth to search for private sector employment. We aim to maximize job and internship opportunities for the city’s work-ready youth by combining the resources of the nonprofit, public, and private sectors in San Francisco.

Jobs for Youth was created to mine the wealth of opportunities in the private sector that are yet to be tapped by San Francisco’s youth employment system. Launched in 2005, the initiative serves to streamline the fragmented system, and convene the resources of various city departments to provide one-entry point for youth and businesses into the dozens of existing employment programs and opportunities.

The program works with corporate partners to create new private-sector employment opportunities for youth. Jobs for Youth leverages the leadership and resources of local employers; United Way of the Bay Area and other community-based organizations; the San Francisco Unified School District; the Department of Children, Youth and their Families; the San Francisco Mayor’s Office; San Francisco’s One-Stop Centers and other city agencies.

History:
Launched in 2005, Jobs for Youth is already making a difference on several fronts:

For Employers: Jobs for Youth provides employers with convenient, one-stop access to school and community training programs. The free program saves HR staff significant time by referring only qualified youth applicants who have been prescreened for job openings. Companies retain control of the employment process by making the final hiring decisions. Jobs For Youth can also assist companies with payroll services, hiring tax credits, work permit and child labor law information.

For Youth: By providing young people with greater access to private sector opportunities, Jobs for Youth helps youth to understand the relevance of their education and begin to focus on their future goals. At the program’s community based youth training and workforce preparation partners, youth are screened for work readiness, ability and interest. Based on their skills, they are then referred to either an appropriate job opening, or more training.

For Schools and Community Programs: Jobs for Youth combines job development and marketing resources to create a single ask of the business community. School and program staff have access to more opportunities for their participants and can focus on preparing and supporting youth once they are placed.

For the City of San Francisco: Jobs for Youth creates an efficient and coordinated system that defines and promotes best practices for youth employment, measures quality and impact, and convenes local leadership to improve the system and address gaps.
