The mission of Caminos is to empower low-income immigrant women and their families by expanding their access to computer technology and the Internet, related job skills, continuing education, and other community resources so that they will not only enjoy economic security, but also contribute to their communities and strengthen their family life as they adapt to a new culture.

Description:
Caminos provides computer classes in Spanish. Caminos also provides computer support services to low-income individuals and to the broader community. Interns are available to non-profit organizations to help with individual projects or to train staff in computer skills.

The organization works to address the challenge of helping the unemployed or underemployed immigrant community move from manual or service labor to office and technology-based work, thus interrupting the cycle of poverty and social isolation affecting their health and well-being.

The use of computers and the Internet has changed the skills employers expect, the way students learn, and the way communities solve problems. The digital economy has become rooted in our system. Today, those without access to technology are perhaps more disadvantaged than before the digital era took hold. Caminos exists to insure that low-income persons in our community can reap the benefits of the information revolution.

The women at Caminos can take apart a computer and repair it, configure it, and do troubleshooting; they can do a PowerPoint presentation or build a web page; they know how to use Word, Excel, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Quark, Illustrator, etc.

Another barrier addressed at Caminos is the lack of computers in the home. We accept donated computers, repair or upgrade them, and make them available to low-income families.

Our Computer Services Center provides our students with hands-on experience while serving the low-income and broader community. The public is invited to bring in their computers for virus removal or any kind of repair or upgrade, or for those wishing to purchase a new computer, our students will custom-build one for you at a reasonable price.

Through these services, Caminos offers a timely and effective response to an urgent need.

History:
Since CAMINOS was founded in 1999 nearly 2,000 low-income Latina immigrants have found opportunities for self and economic improvement using information technology.

Most of the women who come to our program are touching a computer for the first time and, through our classes, are quickly learning advanced high-tech skills.

CAMINOS staff and volunteers provide education and job training opportunities for women limited by low literacy, poverty and inadequate English language skills.

The organization is now housed in three buildings in the same block on Valencia Street in the Mission District. Visitors are encouraged to stop by at any time.
