Teaching balanced emotions, Clear focus and Good judgment for Best performance. Equilibrium Dynamics is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching adults and children how to build a life in which feelings empower - rather than sabotage- relationships, activities and careers.
Description:
We have developed an emotional empowerment curriculum to teach emotional intelligence (EQ). The curriculum is based on teaching a 6 - step framework of fundamental principles and basic strategies much like “tools in a toolbox”. Our workshops teach adults and children how to build a life in which feelings empower, rather than sabotage their relationships, activities and careers. Our nonprofit status allows us to provide workshops regardless of ability to pay and we target minority and low income groups in the city and surrounding area.
Our aims are to
- Empower individuals to reach their highest realistic goals in academic achievements, occupations, and healthy living in functional families.
- Increase public awareness and practice of emotional competence skills to create thriving institutions and safe neighborhoods with community participation for the common good.
- Partner with others for maximum impact and efficiency putting emotional competence into practice.
- Contribute to the knowledge and experience in this field and our own effectiveness through ongoing evaluation of our programs.
There are two sides to emotional competence or emotional intelligence (EQ): the intrapersonal (inside, self) and the interpersonal (relationships.) The intrapersonal includes recognizing feelings, managing their changes, analysis, planning, personal values, etc. and coordinating feelings, thinking and judgment before every action - including speech. The interpersonal includes actions e.g., listening, intimacy, conflict resolution, boundaries, limits and communication. Evidence is clear that competence in these skills and strategies empowers both adults and children for success whenever they are applied. We teach introductory lectures for high school students, faculty and seminars and parents workshops. We form partnerships with universities, colleges and other organizations to provide emotional competence workshops to empower participants to improve their performance through selected skills training, We also carry out training seminars for counselors, therapists and teachers etc. interested in learning the comprehensive emotional competence curriculum.
History:
In 1994, Lanette Brown, a TRIO program director created an innovative, award winning program for talented California high school students from low income families. Recognizing the crucial role that emotions play in success, she hired Loma K. Flowers, MD as a psychiatric consultant. She asked Dr. Flowers to “teach the students everything they need to know, psychiatricaly, to succeed as first generation college graduates in an accelerated seven year program.” The field is now more broadly known as emotional intelligence (EQ) or emotional competence. Dr. Flowers used her broad experience with psycho-dynamics in extremely diverse patients, from community psychiatry and veterans to private practice to develop a curriculum which separates out the normal dynamics and explains them as easily understandable steps.
Dr. Flowers led numerous workshops and seminars with students, faculty, staff and parents in California, and later nationally and in England. Steadily integrating the feedback and experiences of participants, Dr. Flowers developed a program to teach adults, teens and children a comprehensive understanding of feeling management along with practical skills and strategies designed for individual applications. These skills are grounded in fundamental principles and foster resilient character development. They are adaptable to most situations, from survival to the highest professional achievements.
