Afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted wool blankets, hats, mittens, socks, sweaters, and vests to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan.

Description:

Afghans for Afghans encourages cross-cultural understanding and social action by actively involving Americans and Canadians in making practical and unique gifts for displaced Afghan families.

We document Afghan-theme knitting patterns to promote Afghanistan's artistic legacy and to develop a more reciprocal relationship with Afghan women. We work in partnership with the San Francisco office of the American Friends Service Committee and various relief agencies to accomplish our efforts. Program guidelines and due dates are posted at http://www.afghansforAfghans.org.

History:

Afghans for Afghans was founded in late 2001, in response to the events that unfolded after 9/11. This grassroots effort is inspired by Red Cross volunteers who made afghans, socks, slippers, and other items for soldiers and refugees during World Wars I and II and at other times of crisis and need.

People to people support in a time of war
Volunteering for afghans for Afghans in the Bay Area is made even more rewarding because our work facilitates volunteers from all over the US and Canada. I visualize individual and groups of knitters making garments and blankets to share with PEOPLE in a country far away, whose only other experience with North Americans relates to war and terrifying situations. We all are making strong statements, different from Madame LaFarge, taking a stand for a people to people approach to world peace.
