KEEN's mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence, skills and talents of its athletes through non-competitive activities, allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals.
Description:
Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN), Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer organization modeled on a highly successful program in England which provides free, one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities. The children and young adults who participate in KEEN have disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation and various development delays. Each “athlete” has his or her own volunteer coach at our activities. KEEN activities in other locations include soccer, tennis, track & field, basketball, swimming, aerobics, bowling and various adaptive activities.
History:
Since its inception in the United States in 1992, KEEN has accepted several hundred children and young adults with severe and profound disabilities who, because of their need for individualized attention, have experienced difficulty accessing existing programs. For many of the children and young adults, KEEN is the only organized activity in which they can participate given their special needs. After establishment of eleven separate programs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan community, KEEN began replication of this model in multiple U.S. cities.
