One of the few city departments in the country dedicated exclusively to young people, DCYF enhances the lives and futures of San Francisco’s children and youth through innovative partnerships with parents and youth, community organizations, city departments, schools, funders and the private sector.

Description:
Our goal? To help San Francisco realize the vision of the “Quality of Life Benchmarks” adopted by the City’s Board of Supervisors and mayor:

Our city’s children and youth are healthy.
Our city’s children and youth are ready to learn and are succeeding in school.
Our city’s children and youth live in safe, supported families and safe, successful, supported communities.
Our city’s children and youth contribute to the growth, development and vitality of San Francisco.

With these benchmarks as our beacon and a budget of over $38 million, DCYF supports children and youth in every one of San Francisco’s neighborhoods and districts through the following endeavors:

Strategic Funding: Through the Children’s Fund and the city’s General Fund, DCYF funds over 140 community-based organizations and city departments. As a result, children, youth and families participate in a broad range of programs in the areas of early childhood, academic support, health and wellness, youth employment, family support and cultural enrichment.
Citywide Initiatives and Projects: Often leveraging private, state and federal dollars to complement city funds, DCYF creates and facilitates innovative citywide projects addressing issues such as child care (CARES and the High Quality Child Care Initiative), youth and family support (Beacon Centers), adolescent health (Wellness Centers) and youth employment. Many of these initiatives are model programs setting the bar for others throughout the country.
Shared Agenda for Children and Youth: DCYF is facilitating a first-in-the-nation coordinated planning process for children and youth services that incorporates an evaluation of our funded organizations (including a youth-led component called Youth IMPACT), a community inclusion process and best practices from around the state and country. Such a process will result in a citywide agenda for San Francisco’s children and youth that will help guide not only the disbursement of the Children’s Fund, but also the development of a stronger, more coordinated system of services addressing priority needs.
