Our mission is to provide a non-competitive and encouraging environment for the exploration of intergenerational and interdisciplinary learning. Through cooperative relationships and collaboration, we strive to provide an open forum for the exchange of knowledge, the creation of ideas, and the celebration of community work.
Description:
CELL stands for Collectively Explorative Learning Labs. CELLspace is a volunteer-based collaborative art center which fosters community through art and education. CELLspace offers classes and use of communal workspace in a variety of artistic mediums: sewing and crafts, drawing and painting, media and visual arts, metal, wood, music, dance theater and social activism. Our 10,000 square foot facility serves as an arts incubator, enabling emerging Bay Area artists to create, develop, exhibit, and perform new work in an affordable, cooperative and collaborative environment. CELLspace offers affordable space rentals for rehearsals, meetings, photo and film shoots and other artistic uses.
History:
CELLspace was founded in 1996 when a group of artists leased space on Bryant Street. Over the past eight years, we have significantly upgraded what was originally an undeveloped 10,000 square foot space. The space has been designed, built and maintained by the emerging artists we serve. Emerging arts groups, individual artists, and arts organizations using the space as an arts making facility have sustained the venues of operation. During 1998 more than 15,000 people attended over 80 different exhibitions, performances, readings and screenings at CELLspace and our 1999 programs increased our audiences to over 30,000. Over the past several years, our performance space has been the site of more than 180 productions, most of them original work by up and coming artists in the community. CELLspace's Crucible-Steel Gallery is the site of monthly exhibitions that provide emerging visual artists access to the audiences who attend events in the other parts of the building.
