Description:
The Lively Foundation presents three annual concert series in SF and around the Bay Area. Its Artistic Director, Dancer-Choreographer, Leslie Friedman, has been presented on historic international tours by the US State Dept. to Russia, China, India, and many other nations. Dr. Friedman performs with her company and as a soloist around the US and abroad."Simply a joy to watch!" cheered The Times, London writing of her performances. Lively also presents concerts for schoolchildren in SF, San Jose, and the mid-peninsula. These concerts are both entertaining and educational, connecting closely to the schools' curriculum. Lively has worked closely with important contemporary composers, often performing the world premiere of music by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award winning composers. Lively publishes The Hedgehog, the international arts review, a quarterly magazine about the arts. Lively has also organized and presented exhibitions of world-class visual artists. Exhibitions include work by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jonathan Clark.
History:
The Lively Foundation was founded by supporters of the work of dancer-choreographer Leslie Friedman. It was incorporated in 1983 and recognized by the IRS in 1984. From its inception, Lively has presented world class performances by internationally acclaimed artists in San Francisco, around the Bay Area, and on national and international tours. Local and international press comments have been wonderful. "Crystalline humour; incredible energy." wrote the Toronto Globe & Mail newspaper. Also from its inception, Lively has made the presentation of educational and entertaining programs for young people a top priority. In 2003, Lively's matinees for SF school children brought nearly 1800 school children to the Herbst Theater. Our Artistic Director, Dr.Leslie Friedman(Ph.D. from Stanford University in History) has been presented on ground breaking international tours by the US State Dept. She was the first American artist of any kind to perform for a Russian audience,in public, in Moscow and Leningrad, with joint US/USSR sponsorship after a 14 year break in cultural relations. She was the first American artist to perform, choreograph and teach in China with joint US/Chinese sponsorship. She made similar historic "firsts" in many nations including: Poland, Hungary, Romania, Tunisia, Egypt, Spain, India, Sri Lanka. Dr. Friedman tours her performances nationally and internationally.
