Planning for Elders in the Central City (PECC) provides leadership that brings together elders, persons with disabilities, workers and worker representatives, community leaders, social service providers and advocacy organizations to improve the quality of life for elders, persons with disabilities and their care providers. PECC facilitates collaboration and strengthens the capacity to identify and solve problems and to address emerging issues at the neighborhood level throughout San Francisco and beyond through its programs and activities.

Description:
PECC's core programs include:
Seniors Survival School, a multi-lingual education and training program that empowers elders to access community-based health and supportive services.
In Home Supportive Services and Health Task Force, an ongoing group that brings stakeholders together to work for improvements in IHSS and other homecare services.
Healthcare Action Team, a grass-roots, coalitional effort to push for more supportive housing, expanded eligiblity for homecare and improved hospital discharge planning.
Planning for Elders also provides computer and technology training at an accessible computer lab at our offices.

History:
Planning for Elders in the Central City (PECC) was founded in 1990 by a consortium of senior agencies and community organizations. Initial funding was provided by the Bay Area Independent Elders Program, a consortium of funders including the San Francisco Foundation, Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, Koret Foundation, and Marin Community Foundation. The shared goal was to strengthen community support for elders and their caregivers.

In 1991, PECC undertook a comprehensive survey of Central City elders, caregivers, and service providers. The survey was conducted in nine languages through neighborhood "house meetings" and personal interviews. Findings identified the four crosscutting issues that persistently compromise the health and well being of disadvantaged elders in our community:

Over the years, PECC has developed a number of programs and initiatives that have expanded beyond the Central City of San Francisco, but PECC's Mission to improve the quality of life for elders, persons with disabilities and their care providers remains rooted in addressing these cross-cutting issues.
