The San Francisco Media Archive is a non profit institution dedicated to the acquisition, preservation and access of culturally significant film and related media.

Description:
The San Francisco Media archive preserves international, national, regional and locally significant cultural media history. It has a film screening program open to the public, provides internships where students can learn about film and digital media and sponsors the Annual Home Movie Day, presenting and preserving home movie films from San Francisco and the Bay Area. In addition the archive evaluates, repairs and transfers valuable home movies from film to video and digital media for Bay Area residents. The archive is the only publicly accessible moving image archive in San Francisco.

History:
Our organization was founded 10 years ago by Director Stephen Parr, a film and videomaker, archivist, curator and writer.
The San Francisco Media Archive was founded to preserve and make available valuable film and media history to residents in the Bay Area that might otherwise not be preserved. Amateur films, educational films, home movies, and many other historically important films and related media are safely stored in its archives. Since the archive was founded it's collection has grown to over 50,000 films, tapes and other moving image materials. It has regularly received funding for film preservation work from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Many volunteers and interns have gone on to study and obtain degrees in library science, film preservation and related subjects after interning at the archive. The San Francisco Media Archive is the only publicly accessible moving image archive in San Francisco.
