History:
Baulines Craft Guild was founded in 1972 in Bolinas, CA by Tom D'Onofrio, and acheived non-profit status four years later. Apprentices came to the small town in Northern California to serve and learn in the studios of furniture makers, weavers, leatherworkers, architects, photographers, potters. By 1978, the Guild had attracted an audience of 12,000 people who attended the annual Master/Apprentice exhibition. Shortly after that, the Guild moved it's headquarters to Sausalito. Tom D'Onofrio left the executive directorship, and Lynn Learned came on board. The Guild continued to accept apprentices, and hold member exhibitions, and began to incude artist-in-schools offerings. In the late 80's and 90's, the Guild had headquarters in Town Center and Larkspur Landing in Corte Madera, including office and exhibition space. A slide registry was begun. Guild director Kathleen Hanna inaugurated the production of the juried exhibition "California Design," based on the model of Eudora Moore of Pasadena, who presented a comprehensive exhibition of innovative design and craftsmanship of California. The exhibition is open to all craftspeople in California who submit to the jury process. In 1996, the Guild began serving the youth of Marin County in an artist-in-schools program. Programs were offered at Tamalpais Highschool, CenterPoint agency, and the Canal Community Alliance, as well as locations in San Francisco. Under Director Janet Moore, the Guild continues it's programs of member services and exhibition, Canal Community After School program, and inaugurates the Junior Apprentice program, sending youth to study in the studio of a Master, preparatory to further education, or job skills aquisition.
