The San Francisco Children's Art Center (SFCAC) is a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization that seeks to empower children and foster their sense of self through exploration of the artistic process. In discovering their creative power, students at the art center learn to view the world as a place filled with possibilities, and to shape and express their own vision.
Description:
Located in the scenic Fort Mason Center, the Art Center offers classes for children ages 27 months to 10 years. In the summer, one-week half-day workshops are available. The instructional approach focuses on a process-oriented art experience in which children are encouraged to trust their own creative expression rather than follow examples of previously-created art projects. Weekend birthday parties are also centered on a process-based art experience. As funding permits, teachers lead classes at community centers in San Francisco and scholarships allow children to attend classes at the Fort Mason Studio.
History:
Founded in 1978, SFCAC is one of the original Fort Mason Center tenants. The Art Center is very fortunate to have two lead teachers who have both been on staff for over 15 years. This affords a wonderful continuity and consistency in the classes - younger siblings of former students often enroll and adjust quickly having already gotten to know the teachers by visiting with the older brother or sister.
