Last updated on August 4, 2008

The mission of the San Carlos Healthy Cities Tutoring Program is to support the children of our community through the services of volunteer tutor-mentors.

Description:
The San Carlos Healthy Cities Tutoring Program is a tutor-mentor program providing San Carlos School District children with one-on-one support from local community volunteers.
Through one-on-one tutoring sessions, guided by the child's classroom teacher, the volunteers help the students develop academic skills as well as gain self-confidence. The program is a collaboration between the City of San Carlos and the San Carlos School District.

  • I always appreciate all the extra help and support given by the Healthy Cities tutors.
  • The students look forward to the times with their tutors.
  • The caring and concern leaves a lasting impression.

These are just a few of the comments made by teachers on the teacher evaluation completed at the end of the school year about the program.
During the 2006-07 school year, 200 volunteer tutors worked with 225 students in San Carlos and gave them the important one-on-one help that can make such a difference in a child's success.

Volunteers are needed to work with children again this year. Tutors meet with their student once a week, for approximately 45 minutes. Volunteers receive instruction on how to tutor before they are matched with a child and the child's teacher gives guidance and instruction as well.

History:
The San Carlos Healthy Cities Tutoring Program was founded in December 1996 by a community-based steering committee. The program was initially funded by the California Healthy Cities Project, which funded municipalities that were working actively to promote the quality of life for its citizens through strong, healthy families and communities. San Carlos was the first city in San Mateo County to be selected as a California Healthy City, due to the work of the tutor-mentor program.
