Community Clinic Volunteer Positions available at Lyon-Martin!

Lyon-Martin ensures that poverty and prejudice are not barriers to health care. YOU can contribute to our mission and gain valuable skills: Become a Volunteer!

Lyon-Martin Health Services, www.lyon-martin.org, is a primary care, not-for-profit clinic in San Francisco. We provide personalized healthcare and support services to women and transgender people who lack access to quality care because of their sexual or gender identity regardless of their ability to pay.

We enjoy an active presence in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities in the SF Bay Area and beyond. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles at our clinic, and we welcome people who can volunteer a minimum of 3 hours per week AS WELL AS people who can only give their time for special events occasionally.

Volunteers help in all sorts of ways.

  • Providing front desk support
  • Translating written materials and interpreting during appointments
  • Filing and organizing, helping with mass mailings
  • Updating the donor database and helping with billing
  • Cleaning and restocking exam rooms
  • Shadowing providers and assisting with pap smears and other procedures.
  • Rooming patients and taking vitals
  • Organizing lab results and ensuring appropriate follow-up
  • …and more!

The ideal Lyon-Martin volunteer has…

  • Appreciation of diversity issues and experience and/or interest in providing customer service
  • Previous experience and/or desire to work with LGBTQ communities
  • Respect for the needs of the underserved, including patients experiencing homelessness, transgender patients seeking a safe primary care home, etc.
  • Initiative, patience, and a sense of humor
  • Desire to give time on a dependable schedule

Volunteer shifts occur within the following schedule, according to the clinic's open hours:

Mondays and Wednesdays: 10am-7pm
Tuesdays and Fridays: 8:30am-5pm
Thursdays: 11am-5pm

Please visit http://lyon-martin.org/volunteer.php for more information and a volunteer application.

MORE INFO ABOUT LYON-MARTIN:

Founded in 1979 and named in recognition of LGBTQ civil rights activists, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, a group of medical providers and health activists created this clinic to respond to the gap in sensitive health services available to lesbians.

Since 1993, Lyon-Martin also has been the safety-net health care provider for very low-income and uninsured women and transgender people in San Francisco. Currently, 84 percent of our patients are uninsured.

Our primary care services include:
• Breast Health Screening, referral and follow-up
• Routine Physical Examinations
• Gynecological Care, HIV & STD Testing, and Family Planning
• Fertility information and referral
• Internal Medicine
• Preventive Health care and Health education
• Hormone Therapy for Transition (FTM or MTF)
• Employment Physicals
• Vaccination and Immunizations

“Without its services, 2006 would have seen four more people with cancer continuing to progress, five more people with HIV infection lingering undiagnosed, thirty-five more people with diabetes remaining poorly managed, six hundred more transgender people buying and injecting hormones on the street, 1,500 more people missing cervical cancer screening,” – excerpt from an article written recently by our Executive Director and Medical Director Dawn Harbatkin, MD.

And don’t forget to check-out our website at www.lyon-martin.org.

Clinical Assistants must be over 18, and willing to contribute at least 3 hours a week for 6 months minimum.
