Family Service's innovative Senior Peer Counseling Program is seeking volunteers age 55+ to provide free one-on-one and group peer counseling to older adults in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and to the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender community. Based on principles of self-help and mutual aid, the program seeks to develop a bond of trust between people of similar age, experience, values, wisdom, and culture. Senior peer counselors will be asked to give a one year commitment and typically will meet with clients one hour per week at a mutually agreeable location. To further their development, peer counselors will attend bi-weekly consultation meetings with a licensed supervisor and periodic in-service training sessions at Family Service. Family Service is seeking a minimum of 50 volunteers age 55 and over who are caring individuals fluent in the aforementioned languages to serve as peer counselors for the program.
Volunteers should be aged 55+ and should be willing to: meet once per week for one hour with their senior clients; give a one-year commitment; and attend a 54-hour training program and periodic in-person meetings with a supervisor.
