CorpWatch Seeks Corporate Research Wiki Intern

POSITION TITLE: Corporate Research Wiki Intern

About CorpWatch:
Established in 1996, San Francisco Bay Area-based CorpWatch, an independent media organization, supports movements for human rights, environmental justice and democracy around the world. We expose corporate abuse, fraud and corruption through investigative journalism published on our award-winning websites, www.corpwatch.org and www.warprofiteers.com, and via in-depth special reports.

Position Summary:
You will work with our collaborative research project team on our corporate malfeasance wiki, Crocodyl.org. The candidate should be passionate about digging up dirt on companies, and methodical in their approach to doing research. Knowledge and familiarity with web-based technologies and computers is a plus (it is OK if you don't know HTML), as well as reverence for keeping information in the public domain.

Ability to work remotely, Internet access, and a commitment of 20 hours a week are ideal. College credit and work-study agreements are encouraged.

Job Responsibilities:

Overall

  • Assist in creating online dossiers of corporate misbehavior
  • Publishing research on Content Management System (Drupal)
  • Coordinate with an online community of professional and amateur editors, researchers, and activists
  • Get the word out about Crocodyl through various online channels such as social networking sites, news sites, forums and email lists.
  • Work collaboratively with minimal oversight, but solid and regular communication.

Day-to-day tasks

  • Create company profiles through web interface
  • Collect corporate financial data from sources such as Hoovers, the SEC database, EPA database, etc..
  • Write short descriptive narratives of corporate malfeasance, sourcing all factual assertions with relevant and authoritative links to supporting evidence
  • Communicate with other contributors regularly through email, email list, talk pages on website and phone
  • Regularly participate in creating a positive and educational online community for the public to learn to do corporate research

Qualifications:

  • College level writing ability
  • Experience with web research
  • Experience with using the Internet and new media in general
