Volunteers for the Friendship Line provide telephone counseling and crisis support to older and frail adults who may be isolated, depressed, mentally ill or suicidal. In addition to receiving incoming calls from individuals nationwide, volunteers also reach out to older adults in San Francisco by calling them on a regular basis to provide emotional support, well being checks and medication reminders. This ongoing connection becomes a life line for some isolated or homebound seniors, reminding them that they remain important members of our community, and helping to keep them living independently. Volunteers commit to a four hour phone shift per week. No experience is necessary. Comprehensive training is provided by our caring and experienced staff. Ongoing training is also provided. Friendship Line volunteers are invited to the Institute on Aging's educational programs, covering a wide variety of aging related topics.
