what people are saying. I cannot tell you how much help The Volunteer Center has been to us. We couldn't do it without you! A heartfelt thanks!

Lead Children's Tours of a Historic House! Training begins in April
Powered by Truist

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on March 25, 2009

The Haas-Lilienthal House, SF's only Victorian house museum, is looking for enthusiastic individuals to lead 3rd graders who are visiting on field trips. Our "Heritage Hikes" program teaches kids about local architecture and history, in conjunction with what they are learning in school. They get a specially-tailored tour of the House, and learn what it was like to grow up here over 100 years ago. This extremely popular program has been going strong 20+ years, and we always need new guides to keep up with the demand. Classes visit on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings during the school year.

Heritage Hikes docents will be trained alongside those training for our standard house and walking tours -- you are most welcome (and encouraged!) to train for both opportunities. Trainings takes place on 5 Thursday evenings, from 6-8.30pm, on two Saturday mornings, and on one Wednesday morning. Some of these sessions will be optional for those training to lead Heritage Hikes only. You'll learn from experts in San Francisco history, architecture and Victorian culture and from experienced guides.

This is a wonderful educational opportunity, and after the initial time commitment required during training, we only ask a minimum of one shift a month (though more is always welcome.) A shift can be from 2 to 4 hrs long, and they are scheduled well in advance.

No experience is required - just a willingness to learn and share information with these extremely interested and appreciative kids!

Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for details or to sign up for the training: 415/ 441.3000 x24 or cconmy@sfheritage.org.

We'll teach you everything you need to know, both form and content. You must be open to working with curious kids (they're particularly great at this age - interested, perceptive, enthusiastic) and able to give a 45 min to 1 hour tour. There are several flights of stairs.

California law requires that people working with children be fingerprinted. We can help you with this, but if you already have prints on file, please let us know, and that will save a step! (This does NOT need to be completed before training.)

Training begins Thursday, April 9, from 6-8.30pm, on two Saturday mornings, and on one Wednesday mornings.
