what people are saying. I cannot tell you how much help The Volunteer Center has been to us. We couldn't do it without you! A heartfelt thanks!

Help adults study for the GED

Last updated on June 4, 2009

Walden House has been helping clients suffering from drug and alcohol addiction for 40 years by providing both out-patient and residential programs where clients can live, work, and receive therapy in a sober and supportive environment. We have three residential facilities in San Francisco, while our Re-Entry department (including our classroom) is part of our campus at 3rd and Evans (a very pleasant business office/park with secure parking and a nice back yard).

Our clients are all ages and ethnicities, but most have challenges besides addiction such as disadvantaged backgrounds, criminal histories, and physical or mental disabilities. They can be difficult and wonderful and frustrating and inspiring. Seeing them progress in their recovery and their studies is deeply rewarding and fun, and we'd like someone to share that experience.

Our classroom is focused on preparing students for the GED, often beginning with remedial skills. We have one teacher and between five and fifteen students at any time. We are looking for someone who can tutor clients under the supervision of an experienced teacher, floating around the room as needed or helping anyone in need of extra attention. The curriculum ranges from elementary school to basic high school: reading comprehension, writing, math through basic algebra and geometry (most folks who need math help are working on arithmetic, decimals, and fractions). The classroom, at 3rd and Evans, is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30-3:30 (with lunch from 12:30-1:30) and Wednesdays from 9:30-12:30.

We'd like to find someone who could commit to at least two hours a week for at least two months.

Please email us, telling a bit about yourself and:

-Why you are interested in this position
-What experience, if any, you have related to working with a disadvantaged population
-What experience, if any, you have related to teaching or tutoring
-What qualities you possess that would help you in this volunteer position
