If you could not read, how would you earn a living? Pay your bills? Find your way around? Manage your health care? Help your children in school? Did you know that an estimated one in three English-speaking adults can't read or write well enough to fill out a job application or read a story to their young child? What would your life be like if you couldn't read?
Second Start is a participatory learner-centered literacy program for English-speaking adults. Second Start tutors help adults improve their reading and writing skills and achieve their personal goals; some volunteers also teach workshops, help in our Family Literacy program, help in the office, and perform other tasks. We seek volunteer tutors who have patience and are willing to view teaching as a two-way experience, understanding that we are all learners.
Second Start works with native English speakers as well as individuals for whom English is not their native language. All our services are free and confidential. We provide tutors with the information, materials, skills practice and ongoing support they need to teach an adult to read. Most importantly, we teach that a successful tutoring experience involves mutual respect, the ability to listen, patience, imagination, and a two-way dialog along with the "book work."
You can literally help change someone's life. Contact us today.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, speak English, communicate clearly, devote at least two hours a week for a minimum of nine months. Volunteers will receive 18 hours of free training and ongoing support. We are looking for volunteer tutors who have patience and who are willing to view teaching as a two-way experience, understanding that we are all learners. We provide training so that volunteers can help an adult reach his or her personal literacy goals.
