what people are saying. I cannot tell you how much help The Volunteer Center has been to us. We couldn't do it without you! A heartfelt thanks!

Teach an adult to read

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on March 2, 2010

If you could not read, how would you earn a living? Pay your bills? Find your way around? Manage your health care? Help your children in school? A shocking one in four adults in Oakland cannot manage the reading and writing required for these basic tasks. Second Start Adult Literacy Program volunteer tutors help adults (age 16 and older) who are functioning at basic levels of literacy to improve their reading and writing skills and to develop their knowledge and potential, while achieving their personal goals. Second Start works with native English speakers as well as individuals for whom English is not their native language. All our services are free and confidential. Some volunteers also teach workshops, help in our Family Literacy program, help in the office, and perform other tasks.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, speak English, communicate clearly, devote at least two hours a week for a minimum of nine months. Volunteers will receive 18 hours of free training and ongoing support. We are looking for volunteer tutors who have patience and who are willing to view teaching as a two-way experience, understanding that we are all learners. We provide training so that volunteers can help an adult reach his or her personal literacy goals.
