Tutors Needed at the East Palo Alto Library

The Quest Learning Center, part of the East Palo Alto Library, provides a supportive environment that encourages learning and student academic growth. Volunteer Tutors assist staff in providing after school drop-in homework assistance in all academic subjects to 6th−12th graders from the East Palo Alto schools and neighboring high schools.



Duties include:

· Assist individual students or small groups with homework in a wide variety of subjects.

· Assist students in using the library’s online Live Homework Help service as needed.

· Help students determine and achieve their academic goals.

· Serve as a role model to students.

Program Hours:

· Monday - Friday: 3:00 – 7:00 pm

· August 28, 2008 through June 12, 2009.

This position requires a person with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

· Ability to work well with youth from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

· General working knowledge of math, science and English subjects.

· Effective communication with youth, parents, fellow volunteers, and library personnel.

· Spanish language skills are highly desirable (but not required).

Additional Requirements:



· Proof of negative TB test completed within the last 4 months (may be arranged through Quest at no cost).



· Clearance of mandatory criminal background check if 18 or older (may be arranged through Quest at no cost).





· Commitment to a minimum of 1 hour per week for a minimum of one month.





· Participation in a 1-hour orientation prior to working with students.
