The Quest Learning Center at the East Palo Alto Library, a service of the San Mateo County Library System, provides a supportive environment that encourages learning and student academic and social growth. Volunteer Tutors provide after school academic assistance in all subjects to 6th-12th graders from the East Palo Alto schools and neighboring high schools. Volunteers are matched with 1 or 2 students and work with them week after week to establish rapport and build on skills. All tutoring sessions take place inside of the East Palo Alto Library.



Duties include:

· Assist student with homework in a wide variety of subjects.

· Assist student in using the library’s online Live Homework Help service as needed.

· Help student determine and achieve their academic goals.

· Serve as a role model.

Program Hours:

· The East Palo Alto Library is open year-round. Hours of operation are Mondays-Thursdays from 10 am - 8 pm, Fridays from 10 am - 6 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am - 5 pm. The library is closed on Sundays. During the school year, students can usually meet at the library as early as 3 pm. During the summer, student schedules tend to be more flexible.

This position requires a person with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

· Ability to work well with youth from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

· General working knowledge of math, science and English subjects.

· Effective communication with youth, parents, fellow volunteers, and library personnel.

Additional Requirements:



· Proof of negative TB test completed within the last 4 months (may be arranged through Quest at no cost).



· Clearance of mandatory criminal background check if 18 or older (will be arranged through Quest at no cost).





· Commitment to a minimum of 1 hour per week for a minimum of one month.





· Participation in a 1-hour orientation prior to working with students.
