Community Workdays are held at the park on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 am - Noon. Come out and join us! Heron Head Park (Pier 98) is located at the Intersection of Cargo Way and Jennings Street in the Bayview District of San Francisco. Heron's Head Park (formerly known as Pier 98) is a 24-acre restored wetland at the base of the Hunters Point Power Plant. Heron's Head is a unique environment in that it is built on landfill, but is now a thriving marsh that is maintained primarily by youth and community volunteers. More than 1,200 student volunteers serve as primary caretakers of the park each year. They help to plant native plant species, weed non-natives, and clean and maintain the wild areas of the park. Heron's Head Park supports over 78 species of birds annually, and is an important rest stop for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway. The focus of these workdays were the removal of invasive plant species such as Russian Star Thistle, Italian Fennel, Eastern cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), Salsola soda, French Broom and several others that threaten the park habitat value. Achievements during past workdays are the building up of many brush piles thus breaking up the bareness of the upland habitat and providing critical habitat for upland species s such as field mice, ground sparrows, lizards, gophers snakes and more. Some other restoration activities include native plantings, mulching, and habitat construction and maintenance.
We require that people like working in the outdoor environment, care for our community's natural areas and open spaces, like the preservation of our native habitats and animals, able to work with a multitude of gardening tools, and a great attitude for progress. This opportunity is sponsored by: Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ)
