Last updated on December 5, 2009

As a community-based non-profit organization, Larkin Street Youth Services (LSYS) depends upon the support and the input of the community for its survival. A vital aspect of that support is the volunteer program. The energy, skills, creativity, sense of community, and time that volunteers contribute enables LSYS to provide high quality, responsive services for youth.

Volunteering at LSYS is a mutually supportive role between the volunteer and the agency. LSYS is committed to matching volunteer interests and skills with program needs. We offer ongoing training in order to provide opportunities for learning and growth for our volunteers. Furthermore, the agency is committed to creating opportunities for volunteers to participate in program development and evaluation. Finally, while every effort will be made to match volunteer interests with duties, volunteers should be flexible and responsive to the needs of the Agency.

Examples of ongoing volunteer opportunities:

  • Volunteers can work with youth through our Outreach program conversing with youth on the streets to inform them about available resources.
  • Volunteers can work at our Drop-In Center and Housing programs to assist with food preparation or facilitating educational groups in our shelters.
  • Volunteer Requirements and Commitment:

    • We require that all volunteers be at least 21 years of age.
    • Volunteers are requested to commit a minimum of three hours per week
    for at least six months.
Volunteer Selection Occurs in five stages:
    • Attendance at an information session
    • Completion of an application
